What is Capsule Endoscopy?
The upper region of the digestive tract, namely the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, can be examined by endoscopy, and the large intestine, which is the lower part, can be examined by colonoscopy. No method allows the small intestine to be examined easily with endoscopic intervention. In this process, capsule endoscopy appears before us. The pill used in the newly developed capsule endoscopy method is a large size. This method, which has a light source and a camera, is called wireless endoscopy and capsule endoscopy.
How does capsule endoscopy work?
The radiofrequency waves provided by the capsule are constantly detected through a recorder on a vest worn by the person. After 6 to 8 hours of recording, the person brings the recorder to the hospital or clinic following the procedure. The data stored by the recorder is transferred to a computer program, and thousands of color images can be evaluated on the computer. This method can diagnose minor bowel inflammations, polyps, tumors, hidden bleeding, and vascular anomalies that lead to iron deficiency.
What should be avoided during the application?
In applying capsule endoscopy, a straightforward application, activities such as jumping should be avoided as much as possible; however, sitting and lying down should be avoided as much as possible, and moving should be avoided. We can say that the recording time is between 6 and 8 hours, and the capsule in the intestine is expelled within 12 to 24 hours. Although it is scarce, the duration of removal of the tablet from the body can last up to 15 days. In a proportion of 0.5% to 2% of patients who underwent the procedure, it was observed that the capsule could not be excreted from the intestines. In such a case, the capsule is intervened and removed.
When is capsule endoscopy performed?
Capsule endoscopy, which allows you to examine the small intestine, is usually performed when a reason cannot be found with gastroscopy and colonoscopy in case of iron deficiency accompanied by the presence of hidden blood in the stool.
